| WELCOME TO TIPS & TRICKS this months trick is called FOGGY LIGHTS November 2007 There is an old saying that says “We only keep what we have by giving it away.” The thing I started is titled tips and tricks aka T-N-T. Each month I will forward to you an automotive related secret that may help you with your car, (or not). These are trades secrets that I have picked up over the years as a result of twenty plus years in the car business. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of response I got from the first release. Hopefully you will find this one just as helpful as it was... My guess is you have probably had a car that developed foggy lights. If you have not, you will. I did not say fog lights, I said foggy lights. I am talking about one of two things; either the condensation that accrues inside the lamp or the haze that develops on the lens itself. The condensation almost always shows up inside the head or taillights just a few months after your warranty expires. If your car is still under warranty, this is no big deal because you can more than not get the factory to replace them at their expense. If you are out of warranty and find this to be a nuisance, here is what you do… Assuming you have just a little skill and know how to run a drill, get out your drill and load it with the smallest bit you own. Punch a small hole preferably in the back lower side of the lamp. You don’t want it in the front because this will allow water to blow in as you drive. Putting it on the lower also allows this hole to serve as a drain in the future. Problem solved. Now, you may have also noticed that most lenses are now made of plastic which has a tendency to haze with age. If you have money to burn, buy new ones; if you don’t just polish them. You can rub this haze out with a nonabrasive carnauba based polish which can be purchased at any auto parts store. It is not a permanent fix however it will keep your lenses clear for several months as long as you don’t wash your car with a strong detergent. By the way, polishing your lenses when you wax your car will also help prevent them from ever getting hazy on the outside. Chat with you again next month. Yours Truly Leon The Link |
